Are you ready for some NFL football? On Twitter? [Updated]

Twitter reportedly has won the rights to stream Thursday night NFL games, according to a story broken by Bloomberg News.

In doing so, the company won a bidding war that included the likes of Verizon, Amazon.com and Yahoo. Even rival Facebook was in the game until it walked away early, Bloomberg reports.

Twitter has been struggling to attract mainstream users, and this move is likely part of that effort. For the NFL, it gives the league a chance to connect with younger users and cord cutters who don’t subscribe to cable TV.

It also presents something of an interface challenge to Twitter. Conversations on its service have become a popular sideshow for many big events, including sports. Most of this conversation takes place on mobile devices. How do you let people watch a game in its entirety but still give them a way to easily chat about it with friends on a small screen? And will they want to watch an NFL game this way?

I guess we’re about to find out.

Update: Details on the deal are in a news release from the NFL.

Twitter will stream 10 of the next season’s 16 Thursday games. The package will also include Periscope streams from teams and individual players. And Re/code reports that Twitter will be able to stream the games on other platforms where it has apps, such as the Xbox, which may be the most intriguing aspect of the deal.

Imagine what Twitter might be able to do on its big-screen apps. There’s no Twitter app for Apple TV, but there is a Periscope app.
